The puritanical Catholic hierarchy were offended, but Joyce's seemingly anti-religious novels would not exist in their final form were it not for his Jesuit education.

    If the aim is to inform students about religions, this is best done within the curriculum by people trained to deliver such content in a way that engenders respect for all religions. Problems arise if the goal is to produce believers in a particular religion.

In return, the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference has called for a "style of socialism that upholds free speech, tolerates opposing views and respects religious education".
